founder & president
Pat Taylor has worked on the preservation of earthen buildings and historic structures using traditional materials and preservation practices for the past 36 years, 20 of which were with Cornerstones Community Partnerships, a non-profit that works with communities to restore historic structures. Locally he’s worked on the Doña Ana Church and the Armijo Gallagher Home along with numerous other homes in the Mesilla and El Paso river valleys. He’s also worked on the San Francisco Presidio Officers Quarters and Mission San Miguel in California which were both seismic retrofits projects. He’s worked on several preservation projects in Chile with Fundación Altiplano and has been involved with a 30 year series of bi-national workshops with Mexico and the US along the frontera. He continues to work in the preservation field collaborating with Federal and State entities along with home owners. He’s recently founded Querencia Mi Mesilla, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, restoring historic adobe structures, conducting workshops in Mesilla and training the next generation.
Specializing in adobe preservation projects in Southwestern United States (New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, Texas), Mexico and Chile. His projects include the consultation, training and supervision on the National Historic Landmark property of the San Miguel Chapel Preservation Project (Santa Fe, NM). SELECTED PRESERVATION PROJECTS
2009
PRESERVATION OF Mission San Miguel Project , San Miguel, California
Pat Taylor, Inc. project.
Provided consultation and supervision for the seismic retrofit of Mission San Miguel for the related adobe, mud and lime plaster work in addition to the conservation of the historic colonial wood windows and doors. Supervised a 17 person crew and 3 staff members over the course of the 8 month project. Worked with conservators in the selective removal of original mud, lime washed and pigmented murals and their reattachment.
1999-2006
Preservation of La Mision de Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción de los Piros del Socorro (Socorro Mission), Socorro, Texas
A Cornerstones Community Partnerships project.
The preservation of the Socorro Mission, an adobe mission church, began in 1999 with two years of organizing, grant writing, and preliminary investigations into the history and archaeology of the structure. During this period the Socorro Collaborative was formed, which is a collaboration of eight agencies and organizations dedicated to the revitalization of the Mission Trail in the El Paso river valley of which the project would not have been possible. The restoration of the Socorro Mission was identified as their number one priority. As project coordinator, I had responsibility for all aspects of the project. We supervised several training programs throughout the life of the five year preservation project. We also instituted an internship program, which involves individuals from the private sector, universities, and ICOMOS (International Committee of Monuments and Sites).
1990-1999
Restoration of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, Doña Ana, New Mexico, A Cornerstones Community Partnerships project.
In 1989 the Doña Ana Conservation Committee was formed to organize the restoration of the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria adobe church, which is on the State and National Register of Historic Places. My responsibilities were to organize and lead volunteers in the hands-on restoration work. In 1992, funding was secured from the New Mexico Summer Youth Employment Training Program for 21 youth for seven weeks during the summer. This was the first of four consecutive summer youth training programs held at the work site. In 1994, we received an additional training program grant through the New Mexico Department of Labor to employ 6 youth full time. This training program also lasted four years. The youth were provided with the opportunity to learn traditional adobe building techniques and other building trade skills. In all, 150 youth received training during the restoration project. In 1999, the conservation project was successfully completed.
